On behalf of the Faculty staff I would like to greet you on our renewed website. Clicking on this website you show your interest in teacher education and further education possibilities. You can also gain information here on the cultural and entertainment facilities and programmes of our Faculty in the heart of Hungary.
Kecskemét College Teacher Training Faculty is, on the one hand, one of the oldest teacher training colleges in Hungary, which has rich traditions. On the other hand, it is one of the most modern teacher education colleges with up-to-date facilities. In 1918, 90 years ago, the Catholic and Reformed Churches at that time in the Historical Hungary, by supporting each other, founded their joint secondary level teacher education institution, establishing a unique precedent for both co-operation and teacher training. There was also a period of time when the two Churches ran the teacher education institution together. The Reformed Church founded a boarding house for students from the neighbouring villages in the building of our present library as early as the year of foundation. As a result of continuous development and construction by now teacher training is in five big buildings, in our practice kindergartens and in our practice school.
Our buildings are among the most beautiful buildings not only in the town, but also in the region. They have been renovated both inside and outside recently by keeping their historical style. In their modernised state they are looking forward to future teachers and adults who would like to join our adult education programmes. In 2008 for the 90th anniversary we modernised our last building as well. The approx. 1300 students of the Teacher Training Faculty can take part in three-year kindergarten teacher (B.Ed.), four-year primary school (B.Ed.) teacher training programmes. We also have a three-year Designer BA training which was founded together with GAMF Faculty, and a two-year youth advisor and an infant and child care worker post-secondary vocational course. Every student has got the chance to take part in parallel training of any of our courses, both within the faculty or at other faculties of Kecskemét College.
On teacher training courses students have to specialise in an educational field. Thus, besides getting a degree in teaching in the elementary level of the primary school (children between 6 and 10) they are enabled to teach their specialisation in the first two years of the upper primary (10-12 years of age). We offer the following specialisations for our students to choose from: English as a Foreign Language, German as a Foreign Language, Hungarian Language and Literature, Environmental Studies, Social Studies, Computer Studies, Music Education, Visual Education and Physical Education. Some of our students enrol for two specialisations in order to increase their choices to find a job in teaching. Students have more and more possibilities to learn at one of our partner institutions abroad. We can transfer credits they get there into their home studies. Students who come from outside Kecskemét can get cheap accommodation in our hostel, which can house 300 student. We are planning to modernise the hostel into a student residence with all the necessary study and entertainment facilities in 2009. There will be 2-3-bedded rooms with separate bathrooms and Internet access.
